Opry Legend Jeannie Seely makes trek for homecoming concert in Pennsylvania

NASHVILLE, Tenn. September 4, 2015 – The last time that country music legend Jeannie Seely visited the Crawford County Fair was on August 28, 1992 when she received several special honors in recognition of her 25th anniversary as a member of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. When she returned to Crawford County last week it was to play a show that celebrates the Opry’s 90th birthday. Her stage set up included a replica of the famous wooden circle in the center of the stage, as well as the iconic Opry microphone stand. She led the audience in singing “Happy Birthday” to the Opry, along with the traditional Opry classic “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

It’s fitting that Seely be the one to celebrate the Opry’s birthday with Crawford County folks since she has a history with the fair that goes all the way back to her childhood. “I’ll always remember my excitement as a kid surrounding the fair,” Seely notes. “Growing up we raised strawberries on our little farm outside of Townville, and a lot of the kids in the area picked strawberries to earn money to go to the fair…so the excitement had quite a while to build!”

“Of course so many families had made or raised things they were entering in the competitions, and that was something else to look forward to,” she adds. “That’s also where I learned that motion sickness did not just happen in the backseat of the car...it could occur on amusement rides too!” Seely chuckles when she recalls, “I also learned that you CAN eat too much corn on the cob and too much cotton candy! But most of all for me, any kind of musical entertainment at the fair was a thrill. It’s kind of amazing now that I get to be that entertainment!”

Crawford County folks were thrilled to welcome home their resident Opry legend. Seely’s show drew the biggest crowd at the Fair. Crawford County Fair Board Director Diana Perry stated, “We are very pleased that Jeannie Seely was so willing to work with us at the Crawford County Fair. Her hometown crowd filled the grandstand and were so pleased she could find time in her tight schedule to make it back home to perform for them.”

One fairgoer wrote on Seely’s Facebook page, “I really enjoyed your fantastic show at the Crawford County Fair in Meadville, Pennsylvania. I love your singing and listen to it all the time. It was so great to meet you before the show. I felt honored to shake your hand and chat with you for a minute before your great performance. Thank you for coming home to perform!”

The excitement about the show was mutual as Seely said “I just can’t thank everyone enough. I was so honored when I was invited to perform at the Crawford County Fair this year and had been looking forward to going home! However, nothing could have prepared me for the wonderful welcome I received! So many came out in rather inclement weather to see me and even stood in line after the show for a meet and greet, including a 92 year old man who has not seen me since I was a small child! Everyone told me how proud they were of me, but there is no way they could be as proud as I am to be their kin, classmate, and neighbor! I realize now more than ever how fortunate we all were to grow up in that area…and in that era!

Jeannie Seely is in the sixth decade of her entertainment career that began when she was 11 years old singing on a WMGW morning radio show. She has had success as an actress, author, songwriter, and singer, but mostly she is known as being an amazing entertainer. She was first to wear a mini-skirt on the Grand Ole Opry stage and has always been known as an individualist. She’s been credited with changing the image of female country performers, and her infectious humor has always been one of her trademarks. She has been a member of the Grand Old Opry since 1967 and is thrilled to be hosting and performing at the Opry on any given weekend that she is in town.

Jeannie Seely is represented by Carrie Moore-Reid at Third Coast Talent. For booking please email generalinformation@thirdcoasttalent.com or call 615-685-3331.

Shooter Jennings  and Waymore's Outlaws set to groove Off Broadway

The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument.
He discovered guitar at 14 and rock & roll (particularly Southern rock and the loose-limbed hard rock of Guns N' Roses) at 16. Soon he moved from Nashville to L.A., where he assembled a rock band called Stargunn. Stargunn earned a strong local reputation for its live shows, and enjoyed a six- or seven-year run on the L.A. circuit before Jennings rediscovered his outlaw country roots and dissolved the band.

After a short stay in New York, where Jennings assembled material for a country project, he returned to L.A. and put together a second band -- this time with solid country roots -- which he named the .357s. Jennings and the band holed up in the studio, eventually emerging with a rambunctious country album called Put the O Back in Country, which was released in 2005 on Universal South Records. Following in his father's footsteps, but with his own feisty, scrappy sense of country, Jennings placed himself in a fine position to both explore that legacy and carve out his own. A second album, Electric Rodeo (which was actually recorded before Put the O Back in Country), appeared in 2006, followed by a live set, Live at Irving Plaza, later in the year. Jennings' third solo effort, The Wolf, was released in October 2007, featuring a cover of Dire Straits' "Walk of Life" (whose composer, Mark Knopfler, had been a longtime family friend). A month later, Jennings became a father. His girlfriend, actress Drea De Matteo, gave birth to Alabama Gypsy Rose in November. He proposed to De Matteo in 2009 on-stage in Utica, New York. He renamed his backing band Hierophant for his fourth studio album, Black Ribbons, a concept record produced by Dave Cobb. It appeared early in 2010. Later in the year, the album was re-released in a special edition entitled Black Ribbons: The Living Album. The second version was sold on a USB flash drive in the shape of a tarot card. It featured the studio record and live performances by Hierophant. In early 2011, Jennings and blogger Adam Sheets came up with the idea of creating XXX, a new radio format that would focus on insurgent country, rock, and hybrids of both, from new and established artists, that fell far outside the narrow conceits of mainstream radio and were thus ignored. It gained traction and a channel on Sirius/XM where both men served as program hosts. Jennings also moved to New York City with De Matteo. He and pianist Erik Deutsch formed a new band, called the Triple Crown, and he became a father for the second time to Waylon Albert "Blackjack" Jennings, in April. In urgent fashion, Jennings and the Triple Crown began recording; they released the video/download-only single "Outlaw You," his screed against the country music establishment. It reached the top spot on CMT's daily audience request competition and stayed there until a dispute with his former label dictated it be removed. The first official single from the forthcoming album, "The Deed and the Dollar," again reached the top spot in the daily CMT request competition. Jennings' fifth album, Family Man, followed soon after in March of 2012 -- minus "Outlaw You." His next album, The Other Life, was released a year later on his own Black Country Rock label; it featured guest appearances from Patty Griffin, Scott H. Biram, and Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas. The Other Live, Jennings' second live album, recorded during his 2013 tour and featuring many of the songs from The Other Life, appeared early in 2014, again from Black Country Rock.

Waymore’s Outlaws
Richie Albright, Waylon’s original drummer, longtime friend, and right-hand man, joined Waylon and The Waylors in 1964. Richie not only toured and recorded with Waylon for decades, but produced or co-produced many of Waylon’s records that are still being played on radio today. In the world of country music, Richie has made history as a drummer, songwriter, and producer. The list of artists he has played and/or recorded with is long, to name a few would include- Jessi Colter, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr, Tony Joe White, and Goose Creek Symphony. Richie continues to produce and perform after a long career which spans fifty years, and over forty albums.

Jerry "Jigger" Bridges, who spent a little over two decades out on the road with Waylon, plays bass and tour manages Waymore’s Outlaws. A native of Red Bay, Alabama, Jigger was strongly influenced by the R&B emerging from nearby Muscle Shoals. Following a four-year stint as a staff musician at FAME Recording Studio, he moved to Nashville and began working with Waylon on the “Dukes of Hazzard” soundtrack. After his contributing bass work on Waylon’s Greatest Hits album, Richie and Waylon asked Jigger to join The Waylors on the road.

Fred Newell is a bona fide veteran of the Nashville studio scene who has recorded with everyone from Ray Charles to George Strait. In addition to being the staff lead guitarist on numerous TV shows including Nashville Now, he is respected worldwide for his ability to generate feeling and sounds out of his instruments that many struggle to emulate without success. The first country guitarist to ever receive an endorsement from Marshall Amplifiers, Newell is a guitar legend in many circles. He is unique in that he is considered not only a legendary guitarist, but also one of the top steel players of all time. Fred, having recorded many albums with Waylon, joined Waylon's touring band on pedal steel during the 90’s after the late and legendary Ralph Mooney had retired from the road.

Tommy Townsend, their lead guitarist and singer, is a native of Blairsville, GA. Waylon was a pivotal force in Townsend's life as Tommy had the distinction of being mentored by Waylon in his youth. The two collaborated several times over the years, with Waylon playing guitar and singing harmony on some tracks, and co-producing an album on Tommy with Jerry Bridges. Waylon and his band took Tommy under their wings recording in the studio, and occasionally, out for appearances on the road. As a songwriter, Tommy co-wrote three of the songs on Waymore's Outlaws CD, "Same Ol' Outlaws".

An Evening With CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD at Old Rock House

  • An Evening With CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD Photo #1

October 1, 2015 Thursday   8:00 PM
1200 South Seventh Street
Saint Louis, Missouri 63104

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood is touring in support of its latest release, Phosphorescent Harvest. Praised by Rolling Stone as “at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic,” it’s the band’s third long-playing album for Silver Arrow Records. Robinson declares: “We’ve created a piece of rock ‘n’ roll here. People can look to us and rest assured the genre is alive and well. The CRB (as they are affectionately known by fans) made an immediate impact upon their boldly unconventional debut in early 2011. They would play close to 50 shows over nine weeks in California before ever leaving the Golden State. In fact, they’d wait until 2012 to truly introduce themselves nationally with the release of two sprawling studio albums: Big Moon Ritual (June 2012) and The Magic Door (September 2012), which showcase a freewheeling improvisational chemistry, but with songwriting depth to back it up. The band—Robinson (Lead vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Adam Macdougall (keys, vocals), Mark Dutton (bass, vocals) and Tony Leone (drums)—would further develop their identity as a self-defined “farm to table psychedelic rock band” over a 118-show stretch. Late 2013 saw the fruits of this labor forever captured by legendary tape priestess, Betty Cantor-Jackson (Grateful Dead), on the eight-sided limited-edition vinyl release Betty’s S.F. Blends Volume 1, which documented a glorious five night run the previous December at San Francisco’s famed Great American Music Hall.
Only momentarily content with their auspicious rise, the Brotherhood reconvened with producer Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks, Devendra Banhart) shortly thereafter to record yet another set of ten songs that would become the 2014 release, Phosphorescent Harvest. Where Robinson had been the primary instigator behind the 14 compositions that populated the band’s first two releases, this latest effort documents his burgeoning songwriting partnership with Neal Casal. It also finds The CRB refining its approach within the studio. The two previous recordings were for all intents and purposes cut live and released as tracked. For Phosphorescent Harvest, the band spent the better part of 2013 crafting a tried and true studio album. For many artists this would imply intentional neutering in the pursuit of commercial upside, but in Robinson and company’s hands, it meant utilizing the studio to harness their full sonic vision. Indeed, their expansive sense of space and texture has never been so fully realized until now. Casal expands on the process: “The approach was get to far out sonically, while retaining a certain focus on the central melody of each song. Psychedelia, sonic density, and expanded arrangements were the order of the day, but the songs are strong. This band is all about musical freedom. Boundary dissolving is our ideal. Boundary dissolving and a good ole’ Saturday night boogie.”
In an age when so many put their beliefs in trends, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood is committed to something deeper. In Robinson’s words: “We don’t make music that can sell iPads. Our music will not sell you a Prius. I like that. Writing songs has always led me to good things in my life. The songwriting saved me through the dark times, and the songwriting makes it that much sweeter when it’s good. Real success can only come in pursuit of an authentic sound. We’re all very committed to this music, beyond money and egos. That’s a unique place to be.”

The all-new one-hour special premieres TONIGHT at 10/9c on TLC.

Big & Rich are killing it in the charts and Kenny’s on the road well over half the year, making the few days home with his family truly special and completely unpredictable. Despite his crazy travel schedule and Christiev’s back-to-back styling gigs with A-list clientele, the couple manages to find the perfect balance between full-fledged rock stars and devoted parents.

Viewers will get the chance to take a peek inside Kenny’s celebrity lifestyle and may be surprised to find that when he’s not filling stadiums and concert venues, he lives a typical life - albeit influenced by his over-the-top personality - filled with family dinners, yard work, date nights, playtime and bedtime stories.

BIG KENNY AND FAMILY is produced by Pilgrim Studios, in association with Boomboombooya, Inc. for TLC. The executive producers are Craig Piligian, Yann Debonne, Aaron Semmel, and Clay Vandiver. Kenny Alphin serves as Producer on the program.

Twin-Cities based Davina and the Vagabonds have released their new CD, Sunshine, on Roustabout Records, distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution. Sunshine was produced by the band, recorded and mixed in December, 2013, at The Pearl Recording Studio in Minneapolis and mastered at Treelady Studios.
Recorded in exquisite analog sound and set for release on both CD and vinyl, Sunshine is a bold statement from a songwriter and band that draws from the last 100 years of American music and sounds truly original. At the heart of the band’s sound are the scintillating keyboard work and soulful vocals of Davina. “Sowers’ vocals are unreal,” wrote one reviewer. “She simultaneously evokes Adele and Bessie Smith, and the band’s sound is vintage and fresh, a modern take on old-time blues and jazz.” A British reviewer said of her style, “Think of a meld of Bessie Smith, Etta James, Alberta Adams and Amy Winehouse and you come close to understanding what Davina Sowers is all about …Davina is a real talent who deserves greater exposure.”

The Steepwater Band’s latest album “LIVE & HUMBLE” was recorded in Chicago on 4/20/13 at the now defunct Ace Bar on West Fullerton Avenue. Jeff Massey (Vocal, Guitar), Tod Bowers (Bass), Joseph Winters (Drums) and Eric Saylors (Guitar, Backing Vocal) played over 200 shows together on the High & Humble Tour leading up to the night of this amazing show, and is the first TSB recording to feature this newly adorned 4-piece lineup. Critics and fans agree, LIVE & HUMBLE captures TSB’s kinetic energy, and their own brand of Rock n’ Roll improvisation. The record contains over 75 minutes of music, featuring tracks spanning from their previous studio LPs, “Revelation Sunday (2006)”, “Grace and Melody (2008)”, and “Clava (2011), along with a 16 minute version of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” that rips right into Zeppelin’s “How Many More Times” and back again, leaving the listener only wanting more. It is their humble devotion to music, and a commitment to achieving their goals without compromising the integrity of their musical vision that makes The Steepwater Band a rare find.
