Dance/Pop Superstar Helps Raise Money For Cancer-Stricken Friend
ATLANTA- Chris Willis is having the year he's always wanted to have. He's crisscrossing the world playing his own shows for the first time in a long time. He's documenting his adventure through his lens. And, he's finally in a position to give back to those he loves.
"The year isn't even halfway over, but it's been amazing," says the singer/songwriter from Atlanta, who rose to stardom as the voice behind David Guetta's biggest hits, "Love Is Gone" and "Getting' Over You," but is now touring in support of his own hit-filled debut release,Premium (Songs From The Love Ship) Vol. 1. "We recently played Supermartxe in Madrid, Spain. I've been to Europe a million times before, but there was something special about this trip. First, I was touring for my own record, which means a lot to me. But, also there was just a magic in the air and an energy in this packed room that make it one of my favorite shows."
Willis has been capturing this magic on tour with his lens and posting photos for fans on his Twitter @chriswillistwit and Facebook at www.facebook.com/ chriswillismusic . "I'm so voracious with Twitter that every photo I take, I try to tweet out in real time and then have the photos uploaded to my Facebook too," he explains. "I've always been a shutterbug. My dad loved the camera when we were kids and I studied graphic design in school, so I've always loved visual images."
He also recently played Hyde at the Bellagio in Sin City. "I love Las Vegas. It's probably one of my favorite places to play. The energy is great and people are really there to have a great time," he says. One such person was Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, who was on hand to take in Willis' set. He will return to Vegas on July 14 for a performance at The Palms.
Another special show this year was a benefit for a friend, who is battling cancer, during his annual college alumni weekend at Oakwood University on Easter weekend. The fundraising concert, "We Don't Like Cancer, BUT We Love June April," held at the Oakwood University Church in Huntsville, Alabama and broadcast on Praizevision.com, featured performances by Willis and other musical friends, such as opera singer Angela Brown and songwriter John Stoddart.
"I made friends for life at college," he explains. "I haven't been to a reunion in years and I was invited to come and perform at this fundraising event for a dear friend of mine, June April, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. It meant a lot to be able to come back and take part in this. It was really an honor."
Willis encourages fans to donate to June April's medical expenses at:http://welovejuneapril. moonfruit.com/.
Most recently, Willis performed at Festa Da Cerveja 2012 in Divinopolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil on April 21, Crobar in Buenos Aires, Argentina on April 27, Crobar in Mar del Plata, Argentina at April 28, and Paraguay on April 30. Upcoming shows include a stop at the Tomorrowland festival in July in Belgium as well as a mix of South American, more European, and American dates through the summer. "Brazil is fun to play," he adds. "The passion that the Brazilian audience brings is incredible. They really make me feel like Elvis there. English isn't their first language, but whenever I stop singing, they are singing back to me in perfect English and it's always a really powerful moment for me."
