Capitol/UMe is poised to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Poison's best-selling album, 1988's five-times-platinum Open Up And Say… Ahh!, with a sensationally reproduced 180-gram reissue. The LP was pressed in two collectible color variants: red vinyl (available at select retailers) and a limited edition of 1,000 in green vinyl (available exclusively at The Sound Of Vinyl). This exciting LP reissue also restores the album's original full-frame cover art, which initially featured a glammed-up cat person's elongated tongue extending fully down the middle of the cover image, ultimately protruding between the last two words of the album title that had been scrawled across the bottom. Yet back in the day, Open Up And Say… Ahh! was instead issued with a tighter, widescreen, mostly green-eyes-only view amidst a black background.
Originally released on May 3, 1988, Open Up And Say… Ahh! cemented Poison's status as one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, in turn garnering four Top 20 hits and including their first No. 1 single, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." Produced by Tom Werman (Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent, Twisted Sister), engineered by Duane Baron, and recorded at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Open Up And Say… Ahh! sealed Poison's standing in the rock pantheon with ten tracks chock-full of instantly singable choruses mixed with fist-pumping riffs, courtesy of the four-man-band chemistry between vocalist/rhythm guitarist Bret Michaels, lead guitarist C.C. DeVille, bassist Bobby Dall, and drummer Rikki Rockett.
The acoustic-driven universal lover's lament "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" reached No. 1 in December 1988, and fans of the cult-favorite 1991 film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey will recall the power ballad's ubiquitous chorus as being the answer to the eternal question, "What is the meaning of life?" “We’ve never put someone else’s song on a Sugarland record, but we were immediately interested in ‘Babe’ the first time we heard it!” said Jennifer Nettles. “This one really felt like it belonged so we saved it for the final afternoon of our recording session; a special time for us.”

Tampa, Fl. -- Eight songs into Kenny Chesney’s no-holds-barred set at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, the East Tennessee songwriter/superstar finally paused for a moment, ran his hands down the legs of his jeans and told the at-capacity crowd, “I got asked every day, ‘Why Tampa?’ All you gotta' do is listen to this…” When the shrieking subsided, he then said he was going to play a new song about turning negative energy into positive energy, and launched into “Get Along,” his first single for Blue Chair/Warner Bros. Nashville.

“All I want any time I get on a stage is to turn peoples’ bad days into something great,” says the man The Los Angeles Times deemed “The People’s Superstar,” “and take their great days and make them everything you could ever want. That’s what music does: change the moment, and that’s a big part of why I do what I do.”

For 127 minutes in Tampa, that’s just what Chesney did. With a lean show, twenty-five songs and an audience that started lining up before daybreak, the 8-time Entertainer of the Year embraced new songs (“All The Pretty Girls,” “Get Along”), old favorites (“Don’t Happen Twice,” “How Forever Feels”), mid-career classics (“Young,” “I Go Back,” “Anything But Mine”) and solo acoustics (“You & Tequila,” “Old Blue Chair”) for a show defined by ebullience, electric guitars and Chesney’s irrepressible energy.

Reaching for “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” his duet with David Lee Murphy, Chesney mined pictures from his Love For Love City rescue relief efforts to give people a sense of the devastation and work that’s gone into restoring the US/BVI’s Hurricane Irma relief efforts. Beyond the leveled buildings, island natives and school children, the montage focused on some of the over 1,000 animals rescued.

“Music is medicine, and it’s energy, and it’s fuel,” says the man who will play 19 stadiums this summer. “To me, when music is really firing, it can help you do impossible things, lift you out of unthinkable problems and give you a reason to keep going.”

Using “When The Sun Goes Down” as a way to introduce his band, Chesney lingered on the empty keyboard rig, then explained to the crowd that his musical director Wyatt Beard was in the hospital here having emergency surgery two days prior. Taking the collective energy, he asked the fans “on the count of three” to yell, “We love you, Wyatt!”

Like much of the night, the response was deafening. Beaming, the man who ran from side to side, slid down the strut, brought a special needs child onstage to rock and worked up a full body sweat from the minute the second song came to play. There was no question about his – or the band’s – intention, and the audience gave even better than they got.

“When people come together in the name of music, then let go,” Chesney marvels, “there’s no feeling like it. Listening to the fans sing ‘American Kids’ and ‘Setting the World On Fire’ was a total rush. It’s not the only reason I do this, but it’s a good one.”

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - APRIL 16, 2018 - Last year Metallica announced the formation of All Within My Hands, their foundation that aims to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported them for so many years, as well as encourage participation from fans and friends and facilitate volunteerism among the Metallica family.  With that in mind, Metallica today announced their first day of service on Wednesday, May 23rd, inviting Metallica fans across the United States to volunteer for a day at the community food banks the band supported during last summer's North American tour.  

In cooperation with Feeding America Metallica made contributions to their local partners in each city they performed in during the 2017 stadium tour. With the aim of continuing to support the fight against hunger, Metallica is encouraging fans to give a few hours of their time on May 23rd to make a difference. Check the list below to find participating food banks and more information about how to sign up to pitch in that day.  Each registered volunteer on May 23rd will receive a special All Within My Hands t-shirt commemorating Metallica's first united day of service.  Please note that space is limited and fans must register. Armed with a roster of hits including “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Color Man,” and “Too Much Time On My Hands,” a passionate fanbase, and the impressive distinction of being the first band in history to achieve four consecutive multi-platinum albums, STYX has long established themselves as one of the most influential and beloved bands in rock. In addition, Shaw and Young explain to Rather their rocky relationship with former STYX frontman Dennis DeYoung. Though many of the band’s biggest hits were written during DeYoung’s tenure, creative differences ultimately led the band to shake up the roster, causing DeYoung’s official exit in 1999. On the possibility of DeYoung rejoining the band in the future, both Shaw and Young are a firm negative, with Shaw likening their relationship with DeYoung to a divorce. He says, “You get married when you’re young and everything’s rosy. Then, as you start to get a little older, you realize you didn’t have that much in common and then you go through a tough divorce… We still have songs that we co-wrote together, and those are our children, and we’ve managed to find a way to keep those things in play.”

 

Shaw is content to let the past remain in the past, choosing instead to surround himself with positivity as he enters the next part of his career. He continues, “Personality-wise, at this stage in my life, I want to be happy. I want to be around people who love me and that have my best interest at heart, and I don’t have to fight with. There’s just not enough years left that I would want to risk not having that again.”

 

Gowan took over on lead vocals following DeYoung’s dismissal, and he has now been with the band longer than their previous frontman. While he has heard all of the stories surrounding the band’s tumultuous partnership with DeYoung, he prefers to look at it as just one part of the journey that has led STYX to becoming one of the most iconic acts in the history of rock. Gowan explains, “I hear the angst and the history that they had to live through as a band, and I’m respectful of that… I look at it as if we are a great band, and what’s made us great is that we are the culminations of the efforts of everyone who’s been in the band… Sometimes in life you need a blood transfusion. Although I’m Canadian, apparently I was a match.”

CHRIS STAPLETON WINS THREE ACM AWARDS

Chris Stapleton won Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year (From A Room: Volume 1 as both artist and producer) at last night’s 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards.

The awards continue a triumphant 2018 for Stapleton, who recently won Best Country Album (From A Room: Volume 1), Best Country Song (“Broken Halos”) and Best Country Solo Performance (“Either Way”) at the 60th GRAMMY Awards. Stapleton also joined legendary artist Emmylou Harris on the live GRAMMY broadcast for a performance of “Wildflowers” in tribute of Tom Petty. Additionally, earlier this year, Stapleton returned to NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” as well as CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and made his debut on PBS’s “Austin City Limits.”

BUCKCHERRY TO HEADLINE AT DU QUOIN

There are a lot of package tours hitting the road this summer, but none will be as fun as this one: Buckcherry, P.O.D., Lit and Alien Ant Farm are uniting for the Gen-X tour, presented by Loudwire.

Kicking off at the Milwaukee Summerfest on June 28, the tour will cross the country and last through early September.

Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd says of the tour, "You’re gonna get your money's worth on this one, the Gen X Summer tour is gonna be one to remember for sure. I love these bands. We all came out around the same time exploding onto the scene with great summertime hits and an awesome live show...let's get wild and loose!"

Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D. chimes in, "This is the good vibes, rock and roll tour of the summer. A bunch of friends hitting the road together and playing music we love for more friends across the states.”

Lit bassist Kevin Baldes adds, “We’re super excited to tour with our long time friends and colleagues of 20+ years this summer. It’s going to be a real hoot, to say the least!”

Alien Ant Farm guitarist Terry Corso concludes, “[The] Gen X Tour is gonna be one for the books! All Cali bands, all old buddies from the office, who could ask for more right? Except maybe a few thousand American rock and roll fans cruising out to the show to party and receive what we deliver.”

Fans have come along for the ride for years, not knowing for certain who was behind the anonymous band... that is, until Tobias Forge recently revealed himself as the man behind Ghost. Each album is more like a film release than a record release. In addition to serving as director, Forge conceives the role of every character, and oversees everything from the screenplay to video to wardrobe design to artwork to cinematography to soundtrack.

In an interesting twist in Ghost's saga, Cardinal Copia has been appointed to take over vocal duties for the forthcoming psalm. Meet him HERE. Lyrically, Prequelle delves into the plague, the apocalypse, and dark ages. The entire body of work is also a snapshot of the world in which we live in on a daily basis, brought to life through an emotive, enlightening, and riveting body of songs.
