ROCK ICONS STYX REFLECT ON THEIR LEGENDARY CAREER IN AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF THE BIG INTERVIEW,
AIRING APRIL 17 AT 9pE/6pP
Los Angeles, CA (April 16, 2018) – Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, and Lawrence Gowan of the chart-topping rockers STYX sit down with Dan Rather
for a revealing conversation, as they open up about the driving force
that compels them to continue touring and performing in these exclusive
looks at an all-new episode of The Big Interview—airing Tuesday, April 17 at 9pE/6pP.
Armed
with a roster of hits including “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue
Color Man,” and “Too Much Time On My Hands,” a passionate fanbase, and
the impressive distinction of being the first band in history to achieve
four consecutive multi-platinum albums, STYX has long established
themselves as one of the most influential and beloved bands in rock.
After over 46 years in the industry, there isn’t much that the band has
yet to accomplish. Asked why they still continue to do what they do
after all of these years of tremendous success, guitarist Young
thoughtfully explains, “We’re meant to bring this music—which comes from
a higher place and is channeled through us and has the power to soothe,
to calm, to inspire, and, in the best cases, to heal. We are the
stewards of this mighty power, and it’s our great joy to get out here
and use that power.”
“I
would also add that we’re completely unqualified to do anything else on
the planet,” says frontman Gowan, leading singer and guitarist Shaw to
humorously chime in, “My charm wears off pretty quickly at home, I don’t
recall my wife ever being in tears when I left again.”
Check it out here: https://youtu.be/2lIu3dJbHco
In
addition, Shaw and Young explain to Rather their rocky relationship
with former STYX frontman Dennis DeYoung. Though many of the band’s
biggest hits were written during DeYoung’s tenure, creative differences
ultimately led the band to shake up the roster, causing DeYoung’s
official exit in 1999. On the possibility of DeYoung rejoining the band
in the future, both Shaw and Young are a firm negative, with Shaw
likening their relationship with DeYoung to a divorce. He says, “You get
married when you’re young and everything’s rosy. Then, as you start to
get a little older, you realize you didn’t have that much in common and
then you go through a tough divorce… We still have songs that we
co-wrote together, and those are our children, and we’ve managed to find
a way to keep those things in play.”
Shaw
is content to let the past remain in the past, choosing instead to
surround himself with positivity as he enters the next part of his
career. He continues, “Personality-wise, at this stage in my life, I
want to be happy. I want to be around people who love me and that have
my best interest at heart, and I don’t have to fight with. There’s just
not enough years left that I would want to risk not having that again.”
Gowan
took over on lead vocals following DeYoung’s dismissal, and he has now
been with the band longer than their previous frontman. While he has
heard all of the stories surrounding the band’s tumultuous partnership
with DeYoung, he prefers to look at it as just one part of the journey
that has led STYX to becoming one of the most iconic acts in the history
of rock. Gowan explains, “I hear the angst and the history that they
had to live through as a band, and I’m respectful of that… I look at it
as if we are a great band, and what’s made us great is that we are the
culminations of the efforts of everyone who’s been in the band…
Sometimes in life you need a blood transfusion. Although I’m Canadian,
apparently I was a match.”

STYX
AXS-TV SPECIAL PREMIERES MARCH 15;
SUPPORTING DEF LEPPARD
ON MASSIVE SUMMER TOUR;
IN-PROGRESS HEADLINING TOUR CONTINUES
February
24, 2015 – It’s been over two years since a full STYX concert was
broadcast on national TV (“Styx: The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight
Live” DVD, which aired on VH1 Classic and the Palladia HD channel). Now
comes time for a brand new live event that’s set to premiere on AXS TV
on Sunday, March 15 at 8pm Eastern Time/5pm Pacific Time.
The
band’s show was filmed at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV in front
of a sold-out, adoring audience during last year’s “The Soundtrack of
Summer” tour. STYX performed many of their greatest hits, including
“Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” and “The Grand Illusion.” They even dug
deep into their catalog for such fan favorites as “Light Up,” and were
joined on stage by tour mate and former Eagles guitar legend Don Felder
for “Blue Collar Man.” Felder’s show earlier that same night was also
filmed for AXS TV, which will air immediately following STYX’s special.
Felder’s special culminates with special guest STYX guitarist Tommy
Shaw trading vocals and the classic electric guitar licks on “Hotel
California.”
Meanwhile,
as STYX’s headlining tour continues to work its way across the U.S.,
the legendary Rock band has confirmed a massive summer tour supporting
another legendary Rock band, Def Leppard, along with Tesla. The
three-month trek will launch in June and conclude October 4 in Bismarck,
ND at the Bismarck Civic Center. Combined, STYX--Tommy Shaw (vocals,
guitar), James “JY” Young (guitar, vocals), Chuck Panozzo (bass),
Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Ricky Phillips (bass) and Todd
Sucherman (drums)--and Def Leppard have sold over 100 million albums
worldwide.
“Our
2007 tour with Def Leppard forged a friendship that's never wavered,”
proclaims STYX singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw. “It was such an
unforgettably fun experience for us. We've all been waiting for the
planets to align so we could do it again. Well friends, they have
indeed aligned! And this time, those soulful bad boys from Sacramento,
Tesla, will be there, too. What a night of music this will be!
Is summer here yet? Come on!”
Guitarist
James “JY” Young is equally as excited. "The mutual admiration society
between Styx and Def Leppard began in the UK in 1978 when Joe Elliott
attended Styx's first-ever performance in Def Leppard's home town of
Sheffield, England,” he says. “Both bands having emanated from working
class beginnings, either on the South Side of Chicago, or the Steel Town
of Sheffield, England, there is a natural camaraderie and synergy
amongst them. I feel like these guys are long-lost brothers of mine.
It's going to be Guitars A-blazin' and Drums A-poundin' regardless of
who’s on the stage, featuring arguably the most successful rock band of
the late 1980's, paired with one of the most successful bands of the
late 1970s, early 1980s. The ingestion of too much sugar can lead to
illness, but ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ is a recipe for healthy smiles and a
fun night for everyone!!!”

Rock Legend And Media Mogul Gene Simmons Sits Down With Dan Rather For A Candid And Heartfelt Edition Of 'THE BIG INTERVIEW' Tomorrow Night, Tuesday, Sept. 30 At 8pE
The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER Openly Discusses an Eclectic Array of Topics Such As His Views on Life, Love, America, the State of Music, the Magic of KISS, and More
Two legends go head-to-head on AXS TV, as celebrated musician, author, entrepreneur and Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Gene Simmons sits down for an in-depth discussion with award-winning newsman Dan Rather for a special edition of THE BIG INTERVIEW tomorrow night - Tuesday, September 30, at 8pE/5pP.
Rather pulls no punches during the hour-long episode as he takes viewers on a journey into the unprecedented life and career of the outspoken musician and business man, from his life and loves, to his views on the music industry and his passion for America. In an emotional account of his childhood, Simmons reflects on his youth in Israel, surrounded by war and poverty, with no electricity and lacking amenities like toothpaste. Opening up about his mother's time in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, Simmons reveals the profound impact that she had on his life, and the powerful experience of watching her be sworn in as an American citizen when he was eight-and-a-half years old.Simmons is in rare form throughout, allowing Rather to get surprisingly personal, and eliciting a side of the superstar that isn't often seen on stage or television. From his father abandoning the family when Simmons was just seven years old, inspiring his decades-long fear of commitment and reluctance to have children; to his high-profile liaisons with Cher and Diana Ross; as well as his marriage to Shannon Tweed, the issues they've overcome, and the decision to open up his life, home, and children to the world on the hit reality show GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS which airs on AXS TV. No stone is left unturned.
While Simmons may have finally settled down as a family man, his career, both as an entrepreneur and a founding member of KISS, has, arguably, never been hotter. With the band's blockbuster 40th anniversary tour well underway, Simmons delves into the origins of KISS, their refusal to play the pop music game, and their commitment to being completely authentic and original as they smashed through the '70s folk scene and changed the face of the industry forever. For him, the rock is his religion, the stage is his church, and the show is two hours of pure magic fueled by sweat, fire, and fake blood.
It's this same drive, what Simmons describes as "the working man's ethic," that has helped him build a multi-million dollar empire that includes a record company, restaurant chain, race horse operations and an Arena Football team, and earned him a lifetime achievement award from Forbes Magazine in 2012. The best-selling author's newest book, ME, INC., designed to help people unleash their inner rock god in both life and business, is due out later this fall. A promo clip is available at http://bit.ly/1pwUcas.
"Gene Simmons has never been shy about delivering the straight truth as he sees it, and this episode of THE BIG INTERVIEW is no exception," said Michele M. Dix, AXS TV's senior vice president, programming and development. "But what sets this particular segment apart is Dan Rather's unique ability to dive head-first into his subject, setting the rock star bravado aside and cutting to the core of the man underneath the makeup and the carefully cultivated 'Demon' persona."

believe! On top of that, special appearances will be made by members of Pierce The Veil, New Found Glory and Mayday Parade, further cementing the APMAs as the premiere event of the summer. Additional appearances are also confirmed for members of Attila, Bayside, Beartooth, the Devil Wears Prada, Echosmith, Less Than Jake, letlive., the Maine, Neck Deep, Sleepwave, We Are The In Crowd and the Word Alive.
The Gibson Brands AP Music Awards, fueled by Monster Energy Drink,
will open with a star-studded red carpet located just outside the Rock
And Roll Hall Of Fame, kicking off at 5:00 p.m. This year’s presenters,
performers, honorees and nominees will line the carpet for two full
hours, ultimately making their way to the highlighted AXS TV red carpet pre-show area, co-hosted by new addition CM Punk and Automatic Loveletter frontwoman/The Voice season two runner-up Juliet Simms.
Wait, what? You heard right! Professional wrestling champion CM Punk has been officially added as a red carpet host at the APMAs! As a life-long music fan, CM Punk will be making one of his first public appearances since he stepped away from his many years in the squared circle. CM Punk will be joining co-host Juliet Simms to interview celebrities for the AXS TV red carpet pre-show extravaganza!
Here’s what CM Punk had to say about his new role: “Well, I’m actually stoked to get out of the house and get gussied up for the first-ever Gibson Brands AP Music Awards, fueled by Monster Energy Drink.
Red carpets and me don't mix, so I figure it'll be a perfectly
hilarious night with friends and a live microphone—my favorite! Be there
and be square!”
