"Why don't u ever call me anymore? Why don't u ever call me?" beggingly asks lead vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter KENNETH WAYNE FROST of the Austin-based neo-psychedelic rock quartet THE CUCKOOS on their new single and video "Why Don't U Ever Call Me Anymore." The video was premiered yesterday via Stereo Embers, which described the song as "...a catchy blast of streetwise soul, libidinous groove and funky swagger. With a sonic attack that brings to mind everyone from Prince to the Black Angels, it's no wonder that The Cuckoos were named by Classic Rock Magazine as the #1 Psych band to watch out for." The song is now available for streaming and/or download across all digital platforms.
"I'm super stoked about 'Why Don't U Ever Call Me Anymore' because I feel like it shows a different side of the band," says FROST. "We've been trying a lot of different things and I'm very excited to start showing that. This one really showcases the band jamming out together too. It's like a really heavy swampy rock dance track with a little bit of a funky touch. Lyrically I like it a lot because it gets stuck in my head and I feel like people can probably interpret it in many ways."
Watch the music video, produced and directed by FROST in Austin, here:
"Personally, it's me trying to convey a very sincere desperate feeling that I think we all feel at some point or another when someone's not returning our phone calls," explains FROST."We live in the age of swiping right and ghosting and that's tough sometimes. I wrote it at a time where I was going through some heartache and was being totally emotional," he elaborates, "but there's a self-awareness and kind of tongue-in-cheek-ness to it as well. It's very over the top and dramatic, but I feel like it was also very inspired by hearing stories of girls practically being stalked from dudes not getting the memo when they get ghosted, and that's not cool. So, it's kind of poking at that a little. Guys--take a hint when they leave you on 'read.'"
Along with the previously released single "We Can Take A Trip To Another Day," both tracks will be included on THE CUCKOOS' upcoming full-length debut album due out later this year. The band's self-titled debut EP was released in 2017, which Relix lauded as "a captivating blend of genres, evoking the 1960s through a contemporary lens."
THE CUCKOOS recorded the album in Austin, TX hometown studio, The Bubble, with
Grammy-nominated producer Chris "Frenchie" Smith (The Toadies,...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Dandy Warhols, Scorpion Child). Mastering was completed by Grammy award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen (Game of Thrones, Chris Cornell, Eagles of Death Metal).
Lauded as "The #1 Psych Rock band to see live" by Classic Rock magazine, THE CUCKOOS will take their impressive show on tour later this year with The Matt Gilmour Band (which features the son of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour) in addition to a few hometown shows throughout this month.
