TANYA TUCKER: STRONG ENOUGH TO BEND OPENS NOVEMBER 14 AT
COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME® AND MUSEUM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (October 16, 2014) – The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum will explore the career of superstar Tanya Tucker with the exhibition Tanya Tucker: Strong Enough to Bend, which opens November 14, 2014, and runs through May 2015.

Tanya Tucker’s talent blossomed early, despite being born into poverty in Texas and raised in ramshackle apartments and trailers in Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. She began performing on local shows at age six, and within years was a regular on a Phoenix TV program.  A Las Vegas agent sent a demo recording to Billy Sherrill, who quickly signed Tucker to Columbia Records. She was thirteen years old.

At the time, few child performers had achieved success in country music. But the singer’s husky voice and audacious confidence made her seem more grown-up. She proved as much when she walked into a Nashville studio, in March 1972, and announced to Sherrill and the veteran musicians, “Well, I know my part, boys. Do you know yours?” She proceeded to belt out “Delta Dawn” like a seasoned pro, and by summer the song was a hit.

Tucker assured her success by releasing six consecutive Top Ten hits—including the #1s “What’s Your Mama’s Name,” “Blood Red and Goin’ Down,” and “Would You Lay With Me (in a Field of Stone)”—in two years, all produced by Sherrill. The narrative songs told daring stories that courted controversy, and Tucker’s mature-beyond-her-years vocal style brought out the drama and emotion in each.

Two years into her singing career, Tucker appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine—a rare national media spotlight for a country star in 1974. To her parents, Beau and Juanita Tucker, such recognition signified that their teen daughter had crossover potential that could take her beyond the country audience.

On October 10, 1974—Tucker’s sixteenth birthday—she signed a $1.4 million contract with MCA Records, a deal brokered by her ambitious father. Her seven years on MCA yielded the #1 hits “Lizzie and the Rainman.” “San Antonio Stroll,” and “Here’s Some Love.” In 1978, she recorded the rock-influenced album T.N.T. in Los Angeles.

In California, Tucker began dating singer Glen Campbell, twenty-two years her senior; their fiery, tabloid-filled relationship ended in acrimony.  After a stint with Arista Records, Tucker signed with Capitol Records and reunited with producer Jerry Crutchfield, with whom she had worked at MCA.

Tucker’s 1986 album, Girl Like Me, featured four Top Ten hits, including the #1 “Just Another Love.” She enjoyed a long run of success on Capitol (and sister label Liberty), with a string of Top Ten hits through 1997, including three consecutive #1s, “I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love,” “If It Don’t Come Easy,” and “Strong Enough to Bend.”

Tanya Tucker heard her name called as the 1991 CMA Female Vocalist of the Year while lying in a hospital bed, watching the awards show on TV. Earlier the same day, she had delivered her second child, Beau.

Her first child, daughter Presley, was born in July 1989—a year after Tucker had checked herself into the Betty Ford Center over issues with substance abuse. Her third child, Layla, arrived in 1999.

For Tucker, the CMA award came at a time when some radio stations refused to play her music while criticizing her choice to be a single mother. The CMA award, the first of her career, proved that the country music industry at large continued to support her. The national media cited Tucker’s win, and her eighteen Top Ten hits between 1988 and 1994, as signs that country music reflected the evolving roles of women in American society.

Tucker detailed her colorful life story in her 1997 autobiography, Nickel Dreams: My Life. The singer also starred in her own reality show, Tuckerville, on cable network TLC. “Every one of us has good and bad times in our lives,” Tucker wrote in Nickel Dreams. “In my case, they have been to extremes.”

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is operated by the Country Music Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964. The museum’s mission is the preservation of the history of country and related vernacular music rooted in southern culture.  With the same educational mission, the foundation also operates CMF Records, the museum’s Frist Library and Archive, CMF Press, Historic RCA Studio B and Hatch Show Print®.

Brantley Gilbert is having fun, enjoying career and music
by Scott Kiefer

Brantley Gilbert has become of country music's new driving forces, and has went from opening act, to support act, to headlining arena tours in just four short years since making his impact on country radio. Legions of fans across the board, his beloved BG Nation club, and his sincerest dedication to his music and fans has only added to accredibility in country music. Now on the second leg of his arena headlining "Let It Ride" tour, Gilbert will play the Chaifetz Arena Friday night, along with Aaron Lewis, Chase Bryant, and Brian Davis.
Aptly named the "Let It Ride Tour," Gilbert recently said in an interview that it's time for hime to relax and have a little fun.
"So many of my songs and videos have been so serious, if you look back on them," Gilbert said. "I just realized it's time to have a little bit of fun, and enjoy this thing we've got."
Gilbert actually said that making the video for his single "Small Town Throw Down" was the key to finally take time to enjoy his career.
"Making that video is what convinced me," Gilbert said. "It was a whole lotta fun with Justin Moore and Thomas Rhett. It just dawned on me how much fun it was, and that it was now a time to relax and have a little fun, if just for a while."
Of course, being Brantley Gilbert would have to be a little bit of fun by any stretch of the imagination, but it's also still a work in progress, which includes numerous interviews, personal appearances, and concert tours.
"We gotta keep rolling on this thing," Gilbert said, "but, the most important part is to keep counting out blessings which we do every day."
Currently in the middle of the "Let It Ride" tour, dates will continue through about the middle of December, and then some time off the road.
There's plenty more to come from Gilbert's current album, "Just As I Am," however.
“I sing for the people who have helped me do my thing,” he says. His inspiration for writing comes from all aspects of his life, but he knows when he gets an “ear worm” it is a song that he needs to write now; he just has to give it legs and wings.
While he certainly writes for himself, Brantley believes that his music reverberates with others because he is writing about life.
“I cannot take an engine apart and put it back together, but maybe when a mechanic hears one of my songs, my music can help him through something he’s going through in his life. If what I have gone through helps someone else, then I feel I am doing what I was put here to do. ‘I’m Gone’ is me telling others that, sometimes, holding on is not the best decision.”
He believes that songs motivate people to do something. “I don’t sing what I don’t write and I don’t write what I don’t live. I’m not the best singer; I just sing my stories, my life.”
Brantley writes about lovin’, drinkin’, partyin’, fightin’, trials and tribulations, faith and triumphs.
"It's just what I do, brother," Gilbert recently said. "I'm just glad the people like it, because that's why I do it. I like to have fun, put on the best show I can, and make that connection with the people. That's what makes music the awesome thing that it is. It's just sharing real life."

Royal Blood - Ten Tonne Skeleton (Official Video)

Royal Blood's self-titled debut album was released on August 25th by Warner Bros. Records and debuted at Number 1 on the UK Album Chart. Shortly after, the album was nominated for the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize. Royal Blood is a mixture of anguished vocals, ferocious drumming and bass that provides intricate detail as well as a rumble of rhythm. The duo's sound is a result of a lineage that stretches from present day heroes Queens of the Stone Age to the influential Led Zeppelin, and all the way back to early blues pioneers... yet this huge wall of sound emerges from just two men.  In next to no time, the two have earned critical praise following the release of their debut single "Out of the Black" on the band's own label Black Mammoth Records last year.

Jennifer Lopez Aims to Improve Health Care Through Her Foundation

Jennifer Lopez Power of Women
Williams+Hirakawa for Variety
Sisters Jennifer and Lynda Lopez had planned to launch a charitable organization since Jennifer was first vaulted into the public eye. Their talks grew more tangible when both were pregnant, and as Jennifer recalls: “We were sitting around doing a lot nothing, thinking about what to do with the world.
But it was after a health scare in 2008 that the mission of the Lopez Family Foundation was finally born.
“Very early after my twins were born, my daughter (Emme) developed this bump on the back of her head,” Lopez says. “So I rushed to the hospital, and it was the middle of the night and the doctor met me there. And I had all these privileges, which wasn’t lost on me. I went back that night and thought, what if I didn’t have that? What if something was really wrong with her?”
Launched in 2009, the sisters’ foundation aims to help improve healthcare for women and children, and first paired with Los Angeles Children’s Hospital to support the telemedicine program.
Williams+Hirakawa for Variety
Recently their work has expanded to facilities in Panama and Puerto Rico, with brands Samsung and Best Buy providing further sponsorship, and this year the org created the Center for a Healthy Childhood at the Montefiore Medical Center in the sisters’ native Bronx borough of New York.
On the Montefiore partnership, Lynda says: “Our focus is improving the well-being of women and children, and not imposing some idea of what that is, but really looking at the community and seeing what do they need? What improvements are they lacking? There are huge issues with obesity, nutrition and childhood health in the Bronx, and we knew that pretty well from our own lives. It was just a matter of sitting down with everyone there and figuring out what we could really do to improve lives.”

The show--described by PETE TOWNSHEND as--“Hits, Picks, Mixes and Misses” will see the band play all their classic anthems as well as tackling deeper cuts from their catalog.

“This is the beginning of the long goodbye,” says ROGER DALTREY of the upcoming tour.

PETE TOWNSHEND commented, “Trying to stay young. Not wearing socks. Growing a great big Woodcutter's beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim. But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we're lucky to be alive and still touring.”

THE WHO have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964; they brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane.  Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. As they enter their 50th year, the band is still going strong, winning rave reviews for their performances of QUADROPHENIA in 2013.
