Royal Blood's self-titled debut album was released on August 25th by Warner Bros. Records and debuted at Number 1 on the UK Album Chart. Shortly after, the album was nominated for the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize. Royal Blood is a mixture of anguished vocals, ferocious drumming and bass that provides intricate detail as well as a rumble of rhythm. The duo's sound is a result of a lineage that stretches from present day heroes Queens of the Stone Age to the influential Led Zeppelin, and all the way back to early blues pioneers... yet this huge wall of sound emerges from just two men.  In next to no time, the two have earned critical praise following the release of their debut single "Out of the Black" on the band's own label Black Mammoth Records last year.

REO's Kevin Cronin talks about tour, future possibilities

by Scott Kiefer
When it comes to certain musical acts and this region, two names that always come up are of course Sammy Hagar, and "the boyz from Illinoiz" as REO Speedwagon's leader Kevin Cronin has phrased. On their annual pilgrimage to St Louis, REO has teamed up this year with Chicago for a a tour that stops at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater tomorrow night.

"At first, I just didn't know how a tour with Chicago would work out, or if it even made sense," Cronin said Wednesday night during a telephone interview. "It had been mentioned a few years back, and I just didn't feel right about it. Not because of anything bad, I just had a 'different' feeling. When it was time to talk about this summer's tour, once again the idea was brought up, and I got to thinking about their great list of hits, and I listened to some of their music, and this time it just felt right. I don't have a specific answer, but all I can say is I am glad we did worked this up together."

The group's tour began last week, and filmed a show at Red Rocks in Denver on Monday night.

Cronin explained for the finale at each show all members of both groups are on the stage jamming to each other's hits.

"In our day and age, there are really no more secrets and surprises because of the internet, and there are already a couple of YouTube videos, so it's fair game to talk about it," Cronin said. "It is something the people need to know about, and to stick aroung to the end for.'

The show will end with both Chicago and REO playing on the latter's hit "Roll With The Changes," which gives Cronin the "shivers" every time.

"It's like the most amazing experience I have had with that song," Cronin said. "When you hear us and Chicago both playing it, you're gonna get rocked. We have two lead guitars, two drummers, the complete horn section.... and the harmonies.. it' definitely and experience."

Cronin also noted the band plays a new song "Whipping Boy" in the set. Is this a hint of new music from the group?

"I wrote the song and we worked it up," Cronin said. "It's not been recorded in the studio and that's about as far as it goes. Right now, we don't have any plans to record yet, but I'm not saying we won't. If people want to hear new REO, they gotta come to the show for now."

Speaking of Hagar, Cronin said the band just played a show with him at a rock festival in Minnesota.

"We did a show and he was on his way to St. Louis, and we talked about how much we love to play there," Cronin said. "I'm good friends with Sammy and we all love to play there, I think it's because St. Louis is a true 'rock and roll town.' The people are genuine and they really do love to see us. It's not because it's us or Sammy, or whoever. People in that are love to see who they want and no matter how often we go back there, we are always welcomed. We have family there, but the entire area is our family. K-SHE was the first radio station to ever play our music, and we've had the close connection ever since."

Cronin also said that one thing he would love to do is play a show in St. Louis with Hagar.

"I'll tell ya, it's been talked about, sure," Cronin said. "There aren't any specific plans, and nothing is in the works right now, but who knows what the future holds. It's something that I am definitely on board with, and I would love to do that. The bug is out there is all I can say about it."

Every year the band stops through, and brings high numbers to the show, leaving the fans wanting more. With Cronin's hint dropping, there is definitely more to come from REO Speedwagon, but for now, it's all about Friday night.

Toby Keith bringing Shut Up and Hold On Tour to Verizon on Saturday

With special guests Colt Ford and Krystal Keith

Drinks After Work
Building an unparalleled musical legacy, a vibrant career at the top levels of entertainmen and a business empire worthy of a Forbes cover isn't easy, but it's not complicated either. In Toby Keith's case, there's genius in the simplicity. His new album Drinks After Work is another perfect example of how a big project like an album – not to mention a seemingly boundless and diverse brand – can be boiled down to a few timeless truths about hard work and good times. Exceptions prove every rule, however, and Keith is certainly not immune to life's harsh realities when the spotlight dims and storm clouds rise – as they did unmercifully in 2013.
The balance of the album celebrates life's peaks, however, and that's no accident as Keith's music has increasingly become a reflection of his live shows. He and his tight band of co-writers – Scotty Emerick, Bobby Pinson and Rivers Rutherford – do most of their work on the road, grabbing guitars and putting words to music during downtime between concerts.
"People ask why we write so many songs about drinking and partying," he says. "Well, when we’re writing, that’s what we’re doing. We’re out on the road working, but we’re festive. If we were stuck in a cabin for a week hunting or something, you might write about being away from the party. But when you're on the road, you've got this crowd and you’re presenting a party to them, it’s really hard not to get caught up in that and keep it fun. I like having a lot of that on my albums; when they turn it on, I want them to smile."
And smile they have, propelling Keith to rarified air as one of the most successful songwriter/artists of all time with more than 80 million broadcast performances of his work and 32 #1 singles. Arguably, he's the most successful self-contained artist in country music history. And that popularity isn't limited by borders as he's toured packed European venues twice in the last few years. He's also preparing for his first tour of Australia, where he is the most-requested American country performer, recently enjoyed several high profile awards nominations and has had four hit albums in the country.
The process that has led to those hits and chart-topping albums wasn't in place from the beginning of his career, though it certainly was foreshadowed by his debut. Written solely by Keith, "Should've Been A Cowboy" rocketed to No. 1 and went on to become the most-played country song of the '90s. And while he continued to have number one after number one on the radio charts, it wasn't until the 1999 release of How Do You Like Me Now?! and concurrent departure from a label with which he was in constant conflict that he began to set a sustainable and incredibly successful creative course.
"We write all year," Toby explains. "And after about 13 years of doing it this way, it's gotten where I know going in that I'll have enough good songs to choose from. I'll spend a week with Rivers, two weeks with Bobby and two weeks with Scotty. Then I'll write some by myself. So you end up with an album-and-a-half's worth of uncut stuff ready to sort and stack. I’m always way ahead."
From the album's opening thump of "Shut Up And Hold On," Keith and co-writer Pinson evoke an arena show feel. The audience appeal is palpable, and the title track only furthers the vibe with perhaps the freshest, most unique sound from Toby in years. The only track he didn't write, the song was an unlikely stab at something very different. "[Label exec] Mark Wright was really high on this 'Drinks After Work' thing, and I didn’t know if I could cut it or not. It’s really out of the norm for me, but I told him I'd give it a run and it bloomed in the studio."
The classic Toby turn-of-phrase in "Little Miss Tear Stain" – "is never still a good time to call?" – the throwback barroom shuffle of "Last Living Cowboy" and the completely unsubtle "Show Me What You're Workin' With" keep the fun rolling. Even the coming-of-age ode "Before We Knew They Were Good," "Whole Lot More Than That" with its arresting couplets and the wry "I'll Probably Be Out Fishin'" are likely to have concertgoers raising red Solo cups in salute.
Plumbing less exuberant musical depths are the steel-drenched broken heart ballad "The Other Side Of Him" and a Toby Keith-first tribute to farmers titled "Hard Way To Make An Easy Living." But those songs only hint at the raw emotions that accompanied the making of this album.
Drinks After Work is dedicated to the memory of Keith's longtime bandleader and bass player Chuck Goff, who passed in February. Three months later, a tornado flattened much of Moore, OK, where the water tower proudly proclaims: "Moore, home of Toby Keith." Among those directly hit were Keith's sister and sister-in-law, who both experienced substantial damage to their homes.
Perhaps the best window into that sense of loss is "Chuckie's Gone," which Keith wrote by himself and included as one of three deluxe edition bonus tracks:
A twister came through our hometown, tore a lot of peoples’ houses down
That always happens in the spring, and this time you missed everything ...
Stage goes up, stage goes down, buses roll through another town
There’s words to write and gigs to play and you’ll always be a song away
Your bass is there where you used to stand, and even though we got a killer band
I still look up in the middle of the song and realize Chuckie’s gone
"It really doesn’t change the band as a group because it happened to all of us as a group," Toby says. "Everybody leaned on everybody else. We all lost the same friend out on the road. He was with us 25 years and he was my band leader. He was a really good guy and, at the end of the day, you only get to live it once, so you better live it up while you’re here."
In May, Keith rushed home to Moore from the Nashville studio where he was recording the album to aid in recovery and serve as the face of the community to many in the national media. "I didn’t have but four songs cut when the tornadoes hit, so I was a little late getting the album turned in," he says.
In July, Keith rallied fellow artists Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Ronnie Dunn, Willie Nelson, Sammy Hagar, his daughter Krystal and more for the Oklahoma Twister Relief concert. Drawing more than 60,000 to the University of Oklahoma stadium, the event raised approximately $2 million.
This year has also seen him producing another project close to his heart – Krystal's Show Dog-Universal debut. "I wrote a few things, she’s written a few things and then she’s written with some of the biggest writers in Nashville," he says. "I’m trying to let her do as much of it on her own as she can. There’s a 25-year age difference, so what works for me may not work for her. So it's great to see her taking the reins and trying to get this thing up and rockin.'"
Other ventures much further along in their growth curve include Keith's I Love This Bar And Grill restaurants and his signature Wild Shot Mezcal. "I’ve learned along the way to only take on things that work with the music," he says. "When I have a new artist on my label that needs to get out and do shows for radio, I can plug them in at the restaurants. Same with Wild Shot. I'll sell it at my shows, I'll sell it in my bars – it won't take me away from what I do the way some kind of unrelated business might."
Instead, Toby will focus his time – often backstage waiting for the show to start – to write a song for the next album. And, ultimately, it's that continuing focus and musical discipline that has elevated his entertainment career as well as ancillary businesses to heights rarely if ever seen.

Dierks Bentley Sets His Life to Song on Riser

By Vernell Hackett
© 2014 CMA Close Up® News Service / Country Music Association®, Inc.
Any successful career requires time away from home. No one knows that better than Dierks Bentley. And few artists are as willing to share what this means in song, as Bentley does on his most personal album to date, Riser.
The overall theme of Riser is discovery and allowing fans a more intimate glimpse into Bentley. To that end, his manager, Mary Hilliard Harrington, suggested he make a documentary of his life and the things he was going through.
“We could hear that in the music, from the first songs he turned in from the first writing sessions,” she said. “I knew early on that this was going to be more of an album project in a singles-driven world and that we would need to tell the story of the entire project in order for the fans to truly understand and appreciate it. I hope the documentary helps do that.”
Directed by Wes Edwards and premiered on CMT in February, “Dierks Bentley: Riser” is less a music video than it is a candid, slice-of-life documentary. When first approached about it, Bentley was skeptical. “I didn’t feel like I had time,” he said. “I had my hands full trying to tour and finish a record, and I didn’t want to add more work to that. Mary pushed me into doing it, but once we started I was like, ‘Thank God we are doing this.’
“It’s an interesting time in my life right now, having these kids at a certain age, going full bore with my career, my dad passing away, my son being born,” he continued. “I’m glad we captured it all. You see the show and backstage, but you also see me in my kitchen and me pushing the kids on the swing. And you’re in the hospital with us when Knox was born. It’s pretty personal.”
“The video is just as I envisioned it,” Harrington said. “It gives a complete picture of Dierks and this album. I love the moments with Evie, Jordan and Knox because it shows what an incredible dad he is. I get choked up hearing him talk about his dad Leon because I know what a special relationship they had.”
After the recording was completed, Capitol Records Nashville released “Bourbon in Kentucky” (Ryan Tyndell, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson) as its first single. With its theme of drowning the pain of lost love in drink, it wasn’t exactly a typical summer-fun song for the season. Some radio stations even declined to play it.
“I was proud we put that one out there first, even though we knew it was against the grain,” Bentley said. “I got honest feedback from radio. Some guys just said, ‘When we play it, it is so real and honest, it just sticks out in the midst of these summertime radio songs.’”
Capitol decided not to release Riser as early as first announced, which proved be a blessing in disguise for Bentley. “I would love for ‘Bourbon’ to have been a hit for the songwriters, but it allowed me to step back, write some more songs and incorporate all the fun I had on the road with Miranda (Lambert) on the ‘Locked & Reloaded Tour.’”
Bentley’s “Riser” tour kicked off May 9 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Jon Pardi, Chase Rice and Chris Young. “These guys have so much energy and they are fired up to be out there,” the headliner said. “I want it to be a testosterone-driven, fist-pumping deal. I’m throwing everything into it. I’m going out as if it were the last tour of my life.”

Doobie Brothers coming with Boston on Friday night

As durable as American steel, Northern California’s four-time Grammy winning Doobie Brothers sound has become part of America’s musical firmament, sampled on dance records, reinterpreted on “American Idol,” and a fixture on radio formats from top 40 to classic rock.  They continue to write and record new material, tour the world, boasting one of the most loyal fan bases in music, all while breaking new creative ground in the exploration of their musical connection with Nashville.
Singer-songwriter-guitarist Pat Simmons says, “We have entered a territory that we never imagined for ourselves, as far as being a part of the cultural landscape. It’s kind of odd when you see your songs in television commercials and hear yourself as background music in a commercial business, but it’s cool. I hear B.B. King in the same places. We’re in good company”
The Doobies have rung up a glittering track record that would be the envy of any band. Beginning with their multi-million-selling sophomore collection Toulouse Street (1972), the Doobies have 3 multi-platinum, 7 platinum and 14 Gold albums.   Their Best of the Doobies (1976) has sold more than 11 million copies – a rare “diamond record.”   The Doobies propulsive roots-based, harmony-laden, guitar-driven style has sold more than 30 million albums.
Their No. 1 singles “Black Water” (1974) and “What a Fool Believes” (1979), both gold, lead a catalog of indelible songs that include  “Jesus Is Just All Right”, “Rockin’ Down the Highway”, “Long Train Runnin’”, “China Grove”, “Take Me In Your Arms”, Takin’ it to the Streets”, “Minute by Minute”, “You Belong to Me,” “The Doctor” and more.  In all, the Doobies have tallied up five top 10 singles and 16 top 40 hits.
In 2011, the band marked a new chapter.  They filmed a CMT Crossroads special with superstar Luke Bryan, and appeared for the first time ever on the Grand Ole Opry. Their relationship with Nashville continues to unfold, with a new country-based Doobie Brothers project recorded with some of country music’s biggest stars set for release later this year.
Formed in 1969 by Simmons, singer-songwriter-guitarist Tom Johnston, founding drummer John Hartman, and bassist Dave Shogren, the Doobies made their mark with a run of punchy, melodic hits on Warner Bros. Records. They attained radio and chart ubiquity in the late ‘70s, when the group’s expanded lineup was augmented by Michael McDonald, whose soaring lead vocals pushed the band to new commercial and critical heights.
The years have witnessed many changes in the Doobies, but the band’s most recent studio lineup harkens back to their earliest days. Simmons and Johnston continue to front the group. And multi-instrumentalist John McFee’s history with the Brothers dates back to 1978.
Simmons says, “The sound of the band is the same. Tom and I are still involved in writing the songs and arranging. It brings the sound of the early ‘70s back to the forefront. Tommy and I now have been working together longer than any other time the band has been in existence, steadily working every year, touring.”
The Doobies’ familiar and inimitable sound effortlessly draws from virtually every imaginable tributary of American music.
“We’re basically an American band – we cover a lot of areas,” says Johnston. “We cover blues, R&B, country, bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll. It’s based on rhythms, rhythm structures, picking, and harmonies. That’s been the signature of the band.”
He continues, “Think about the influences that come into this band. You take Pat, who comes from a folk-blues background, with a lot of picking and stuff like that – he was a big fan of Rev. Gary Davis and Dave Van Ronk. I come from a blues, soul, R&B, and rock ‘n’ roll background. Then you stick John McFee into that mix – John came from a country background when he started out, and was in a country band, Southern Pacific. And he is a session musician – he’s played with everybody from Steve Miller to Van Morrison to Elvis Costello. If it’s got strings, he can play it.”
The Doobies’ unique blend of native styles came about with a lack of calculation that remains one of the key sources of their continuing appeal.
Simmons notes, “We didn’t really sit around and think, ‘Oh, we need this element or that element.’ The music has always been an honest representation of whatever we happen to be working on at the time. We had all been playing music for a long time before we put the band together, and our roots influences are what come out. Those influences always overtake whatever conceptual ideas you might have. It’s always been that way with this band — you always return to who you really are.”
While the Doobie Brothers continue to draw their sound from the deep well of the past, their music has always been grounded in the here-and-now, dating back to their very first hit single, issued at the height of the Vietnam War.
Johnston notes, “‘Listen to the Music’ was written thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if world leaders could get together and, if they could communicated through music, as opposed to words, they might be able to find some sort of a bridge to get through our disagreements?’”
That approach is little changed in the new millennium. Their recent release World Gone Crazy’s title track, penned by Johnston, dwells on the economic tumult of 2011, while Simmons’ “Far From Home,” a moving reflection about a child taking leave of home, has a subtext familiar to any American family that has sent a son or daughter off to war.  The band’s concern for family and those who serve our country is reflected in their having raised over $3 million for veterans related causes.
The ability of the Doobie Brothers’ music to deal with the essentials of people’s lives in direct, tuneful, affecting songs has developed an audience that spans generations today.
Simmons says, “We have a hardcore fan base that has handed our music down through the years to their children and their children’s children. Repeatedly, people go to our concerts and come up to us and say, ‘My dad turned me on to you guys years ago, and I’ve loved you guys all this time, and my kids are listening to you now.”
“And the songs that people all know, be it ‘Listen to the Music’ or ‘Black Water’ or ‘China Grove,’ are still getting played,” Johnston adds. “Any song that stands the test of time for 40 years or is getting played around the country on a daily basis – that to me is a testament to the quality of the tunes, and that they had something to say that resonated with people. I’d like to say this band has been relevant – it’s been relevant musically, it’s been relevant lyrically, and we’ve always put out a high quality of music.”
The band took a five year respite then regrouped in 1987 for a series of gigs benefiting veterans’ groups and children’s charities, the Doobie Brothers have been taking their music to their fans regularly on tour.
Modest almost to a fault, the co-founders of the Doobie Brothers sometimes grope to define the characteristics that have led their band to become one of the country’s most enduring musical institutions. The fundamental appeal that has drawn listeners to his group for four decades may be best expressed by Simmons:
“In a certain sense, what this band has always had in common with everyone else is the word ‘hope,’” says Simmons. “We hoped we would make some good music, and we hoped there would be some acceptance, and we hoped that things would get better in the world. In that respect, we’re just the same – we’re still hopeful about the future. In my lifetime, there has always been struggle and challenge and some darkness, but with the sun shining through, and that’s what we all live for. You have to look towards the future and recognize that as long as there are thoughtful, intelligent people on the planet, there’s hope for the rest of us.”
