ST. LOUIS – Sept. 24, 2014 – One of the most respected personalities in
sports is being recognized with the ultimate award for sportsmanship.
Baseball Hall of Famer Joe Torre will receive the inaugural Stan Musial
Lifetime
Achievement Award for Sportsmanship at the Musial Awards in St. Louis
on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Hosted
annually at the Peabody Opera House in downtown St. Louis, the Musial
Awards – presented by Maryville University – honor Stan Musial’s legacy
by celebrating the greatest moments of sportsmanship from around the
country. The event
showcases remarkable stories of character, kindness, selflessness and
integrity – qualities Musial, one of the all-time greatest baseball
players, represented.
The
Lifetime Achievement Award is the pinnacle honor presented at the
Musial Awards. It recognizes an iconic sports figure who exemplifies
sportsmanship and whose career is defined by the traits synonymous with
Stan the Man. The award’s
selection committee includes members of the Musial family.
“It
is such an honor to have Joe accept the very first Stan Musial Lifetime
Achievement Award,” said Jean Musial Edmonds, Stan’s daughter. “Joe
represents so many of the
values my father embodied and I know my dad would be so proud to see
their names connected through this award.”
A nine-time All-Star, the 1971
National League MVP and winner of four World Series titles as manager of
the Yankees, Torre was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame
in July. His playing and managerial accomplishments have
been deservingly celebrated. But at the Musial Awards, it will be his
upstanding character and humble demeanor that will be in the spotlight.
A model of integrity and generosity, Torre has been a class act as a
player, manager and Major League Baseball executive.
Among many endeavors that represent
his kindness and compassion for others, Torre is chairman of the Joe
Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which he and his wife Ali launched in
2002. The Foundation’s mission is educating to end the cycle
of domestic violence and save lives. Since 2009, Torre has served on
Commissioner Bud Selig’s Special Committee for On-Field Matters. Torre
is currently MLB’s executive vice president of baseball operations. He
was named to the position in 2011.
