Moon Hooch
Thursday, October 20th
If
any band is a poster child for turning the power of positive thoughts
and intention into reality, it’s the explosive horn-and-percussion trio
Moon Hooch. In just a few short years, the group—horn players Mike
Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen, and drummer James Muschler—has gone from
playing on New York City subway platforms to touring with the likes of
Beats Antique, They Might Be Giants, and Lotus, as well as selling out
their own headline shows in major venues around the country. On ‘Red
Sky,’ their third and most adventurous album to date, the band uses
everything they’ve learned from their whirlwind journey to push their
sound to new heights, bringing together the raw, transcendent energy of
their live performances and the sleek sophistication of their studio
work into a singular, intoxicating brew that blends elements of
virtuosic jazz, groovy funk, and pulse-pounding electronic dance music.
Bleached + Beach Slang

Angeles-based sister duo Jennifer and Jessie Clavin knew that things
were going to be different for their band Bleached sophomore LP Welcome
The Worms. Not only had they managed to charm world renowned producer
and engineer, Joe Chiccarelli (Morrissey, The Strokes, Elton John) to
join the sisters and their bassist Micayla Grace in the studio, but Jen
and Jessie had been crawling out of their own personal dramas. Jessie
was evicted from her house and scrambling, while Jen ended a torrid,
unhealthy romance. While emotionally spinning, she dove head first into
music. She struggled and escaped the pressures with drinking and
partying, sometimes to excess, feeling like she was losing herself
altogether. The 10-song LP was born out of triple the amount of demos.
Sometimes the three girls spent time writing at a remote house in Joshua
Tree away from the seemingly destructive city (a first since bassist
Micayla had never contributed to songwriting on previous releases).
Other times Jen and Jessie worked alone, just like when they were
teenaged punk brats playing in their parent’s San Fernando Valley garage
imitating their heroes The Slits, Black Flag and Minor Threat.

Beach
Slanghttps://youtu.be/Hzs9fJfZQloBeach
Slang are a band who have garnered a lot of attention considering that
they've only released two 7-inches, 2014's Cheap Thrills On A Dead End
Street and its companion Who Would Ever Want Something So Broken?
Refreshingly this Philadelphia-based act have built their hype the
old-fashioned way, without any gimmicks or marketing teams, which makes
sense when you consider that frontman and writer James Alex cut his
teeth in the Pennsylvania pop-punk act Weston while drummer JP Flexner
and bassist Ed McNulty also play in buzzed about projects such as
Ex-Friends and Crybaby. However there's something indefinable about
Beach Slang's music that evokes the spirit of punk and juxtaposes it
into something that's as brutally honest as it is infectiously catchy.
The feeling of youth and vulnerability lie at the core of Beach Slang's
music, which is part punk, part pop and all catharsis. It references the
ghosts of The Replacements but keeps one foot firmly rooted in the
present. It's fun and it's serious. It's sad but it isn't. It's Beach
Slang. Enjoy it and look out for the band's debut full-length later this
year because they're still just getting started.
