Nashville, TN – May 20, 2013 -- Taylor Swift was the big winner at last night’s Billboard Music Awards, sweeping the top all-genre categories and taking home eight awards. Taylor won Artist of the Year, Top Billboard 200 Artist (her second win in this category in three years), Top Female Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album (for RED), Top Country Artist, Top Country Album (for RED), and Top Country Song (for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”).

Released in October of last year, RED has already sold more than 5.8 million copies worldwide, including 1.2 million in the U.S. in its first week of release, music’s biggest first-week sales number in more than a decade. Calledthe slickest, smartest and just plain best mega-pop statement of our time” by Rolling Stone, and “sublime…required listening” by Entertainment Weekly, RED set a new worldwide iTunes record for highest ever first-week album sales, and reached #1 on iTunes and national sales charts in 50 countries around the globe.

With RED, Taylor became the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 with three consecutive studio albums, and she is the only female artist in music history (and just the fourth artist ever) to twice have an album hit the 1 million first-week sales figure. Taylor is Billboard’s youngest-ever Woman of the Year, holds the record for the most songs (11) to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the chart’s more-than-five-decade history, and also holds the Hot 100 record for most songs by a female artist on the chart in a single week.

Taylor, dubbed “officially the new Mick Jagger” by Vanity Fair and heralded as “a true arena-rock goddess at an amazing peak” in Rolling Stone, is currently on the road with the North American portion of The RED Tour, playing 66 shows (including 13 stadium stops) in 47 cities in 29 states and 3 provinces spanning 6 months in 2013. Just last week it was announced that Taylor will take The RED Tour to Australia and New Zealand later this year, performing stadium shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, as well as an arena date in Auckland. Taylor will be the first solo female artist in twenty years to undertake a national stadium tour of Australia, with the last being Madonna’s Girlie Show tour in 1993. Due to strong fan demand in the initial pre-sales, an additional show has already been added to the previously announced itinerary.

Taylor, who writes all of her own songs, is a seven-time GRAMMY winner, and is the youngest winner in history of the music industry’s highest honor, the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. Taylor has an album on Rolling Stone’s prestigious The 50 Greatest Albums of All Time (by women) list, and Time magazine has named her one of the "100 Most Influential" people in the world. Taylor, who is signed to Big Machine Records, has career record sales in excess of 26 million albums and 75 million song downloads worldwide, and has had singles top both the country and pop radio charts around the globe.

Taylor is nominated for two CMT Music Awards, which will be presented June 5th from Nashville.

REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin is nostalgic about playing rock and roll, St. Louis and fans

by Scott Kiefer
When you have been in the rock and roll business for 41 years as the lead singer for one of America's iconic bands, there's not a lot that a reporter hasn't asked you. Since 1972 when Kevin Cronin joined the REO Speedwagon band  at Champaign, Illinois, it's most likely that you've answered just about every question there is, and talked to many of the same reporters every year to promote a show. Such is the case when Cronin granted an interview to coincide with the band's appearance Saturday night on the Midwest Rock and Roll Express Tour at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.
However, to put a twist on things, when this reporter picked up the call, I was notified that longtime tour manager Walter Versen would be doing the interview, and answering the questions as Cronin, and in the style Cronin would answer, while he sat there and listened.
"It's going to be fun and you're not even going to know the difference if it was Kevin or not," Versen said. "So, let's go."
Playing the game, because you never know what an artist is going to expect, the 'interview' goes on for about five minutes, and Cronin can longer stand it, voicing his angst in the background.
"Okay that's enough, give me the phone," Cronin says, taking the phone and apologizes for the duo's antics.
"We are just having some fun," Cronin said. "We have been doing this together for so long, Walter thought he could play me on the phone, so I went a long with it. He did a goo job actually, but now for the real thing."
It's the affection that Cronin along with his bandmates have for St. Louis, because they can be themselves and have a good time with the entire rock and roll thing.
"We love to play St. Louis, because it's like our home," Cronin said. "This year, putting the same tour together with Styx and Ted Nugent, I think is a testament to the fact that rock and roll isn't dead. It was so successful last year, and if we didn't have as many dates as we did this year, St. Louis would be a date that we know would be on the tour no matter what."
REO Speedwagon credits St. Louis as the first major market the band broke out in, and helped to push them to the superstar status they reached in the late seventies stretching through the 1980's.
"We as a band owe the St. Louis audience, and the entire midwest actually, credit for getting this crazy thing started and believing in us in the beginning," Cronin said. "They still support us to this day."
The band's appearance at Verizon with Styx, is an almost expected annual event since the group's friendly rivalry from the old days culminated in the recording of the live concert DVD, "Arch Rivals" in . Since then, the two groups haven't only been playing select dates together, but complete tours.
"We've always had a friendly rivalry with Styx, but we didn't really get to know them until after we did the 'Arch Rivals' concert and DVD," Cronin said. "Since then, we really have gotten to know each other, and become friends. Each year it's like, a bunch of old buddies going out and having a few and kicking back, only it's lasts a couple of months, then we go back home, and do our own thing, and can't wait for next year."
After so many years in the business, one would wonder if there is anything that an artist hasn't gotten to do in their career they would like to accomplish.
"My biggest thing really, would be to tour Australia," Cronin said. "We've never done that in all of these years, and I'd like to make that happen. I swear we're going to get it done. Musically though, one thing we've never done, is play with a symphony orchestra, or even record with one."
Cronin said there were a lot of acts who happened to be doing that a few years back, and it was something that he felt became a little over done.
"Everybody was doing it, and we may have been asked, I don't know," Cronin said. "It was just something that I really steered away from. That being said, recently it was mentioned to me again, and I never really thought REO Speedwagon music would be a good fit with something like that, so I dismissed the idea again. Then I got to thinking about it musically, and how our songs are put together, and I realized the idea of a large orchestra performing REO music would be one of the most awesome experiences I would ever enjoy. Imagine yourself surrounded by a large string section really rockin' and hammering out 'Time For Me To Fly.' It can't get any better than that."
One thing the band never really tires of is the fans and the relationships built over the years, especially in a market such at St. Louis.
"Coming from Champaign in the college days, of course we have roots in the midwest, and getting to know band and crew family members over the years, and fans, its like a family reunion whenever we play St. Louis," Cronin said. "In fact, our keyboard player Neal Doughty comes from Belleville."
Doughty's parents live in Smithton to this day.
"The best thing is when someone comes up to you and brings you one of the old vynyl lps to autograph," Cronin said, "and you can see the circle in the cover where its been worn through, and they have taken care of that particular album all these years, and still listen to it. That makes you feel good, because they truly are a friend, and not just a fan. That's always the best experience."
Speaking of vynyl records, the subject got Cronin to reminiscing.
"I'm going to figure out how to get a turntable and set my kids down and play one of our albums and have them listen to it," Cronin said. "There's something about the sound of a needle making the noise of music, that is nostalgic, and there's nothing like it. No one should have to go through  life and not hear that."
Coming back to St. Louis gives Cronin the same feeling.
"It's like coming back to play, whether it was the old Mississippi River Festival, the Kiel Opera House, or now out at the amphitheatre, there's a feeling that I hope everybody in this business gets the opportunity to experience like the one when we step on stage St. Louis," Cronin said. "It's an equal admiration, really. It's like the ultimate rock and roll love story."

Styx singer Lawrence Gowan sees band as family, fraternity
STYX lead singer and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan in action in 2012 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

by Scott Kiefer
An accomplished musician on his own, Lawrence Gowan received the biggest opportunity of his life when asked to join on of America's iconic rock bands replacing the original keyboardist and co-author of many of the biggest hits the group had. Not only the biggest opportunity, but some big shoes to fill. Since his official joining of the band in May of 1999 as keyboardist and vocalist of Styx, he has adapted to the role, making it his own, brining his own spin to the bands sound, yet keeping it remarkable the same.
On the Midwest Rock and Roll express tour that hits Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Saturday night, fans will once again get to experience the "thrill of a Styx show" as Gowan calls it, alongside touring buddies REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, and a special St. Louis appearance by Mama's Pride.
"I joined the band in 1999, and knew all about who Styx was, and what they were all about, because who didn't?" Gowan remarked in an exclusive telephone interview. "Well at least I thought I did. It wasn't until we did the St. Louis show and the Arch Allies DVD with REO that I realized just what the whole Styx factor is. It's really a comaraderie, and it is a family. I know many people say that all the time, but for this band, it really is true."
Gowan said that coming into the band as the 'new guy' mad him a little apprehensive at first, but those feelings quickly went away.
"Of course it was a little nerve racking," Gowan said, "but this was already a professional organization, and we had rehearsals, but getting out there on the stage the first time, was quite something to get over. Everything went well, and 14 years later, well here are."
Talking about replacing Dennis DeYoung is something that Gowan doesn't dwell on, or even makes a common practice.
"Of course I get asked all the time, but it's been so long now, that question doesn't come up as much," Gowan said. "We are just working hard to keep the music of Styx alive and well, and coming up with new music whenever we get the chance. From the time I joined the band, we have looked forward. They were looking forward then, and still are today."
Speaking of the family aspect of the band, Tommy Shaw's daughter, Hannah travels with the band in support of her charity work, Rock to the Rescue. The charity, founded by her father's band, has primarily focused on its animal rescue programs, both nationally and each market the band plays. Since the Boston bombings however, it was collectively decided that the the proceeds from the rest of the tour would go to relief charities there.
The Rock to the Rescue charity organization will be giving away a guitar signed by all three acts as part of a silent raffle at each show.   Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity in Boston to help victims of the recent explosions.  The remaining twenty-five percent will be given to local charities in the respective tour market.
"Hannah has been, and is doing such great work the charity," Gowan said. "She is the perfect fit for it too. She represents the band well, and helps us to give back. It's may not be much, but it's the least that we can do, because every little bit helps. Giving the money to the Boston fund was important to us, but it's also important that these local charities get the resources they need as well."
Gowan is continuing to work on solo projects, and is expected to have a solo project finished this year.
"We've been working hard on it," Gowan said. "I think we have most of the recording tracks done, maybe a few more. Now it's on to post-production things. It's just been so busy with Styx, that it's kind of an outside hobby. It's the summer season, but our big tour was in early spring, so I hope to have it completed around the end of the summer."
There is no working title at the moment for the solo project.
"In the meantime, we are going to fishing up the RNR Express Tour, play some other dates throughout the summer at some festivals and things, and enjoy what we're doing. We're looking forward to our annual pilgrimage to St. Louis, and especially with REO and Ted, again this year. We're looking forward to a night full of hits, fun, and just good old rock n' roll with some good old friends."

What: Boys Noize Remix of new single "Axis" premiering today via Mixmag

Where: HERE

When: Now

Why: Pet Shop Boys will release their 12th studio album on July 15th.

Pet Shop Boys - Axis (Boys Noize Remix)
Pet Shop Boys - Axis (Boys Noize Remix)

Pet Shop Boys return in triumphant form with their new studio album 'Electric', the first to appear on their own label x2 (via Kobalt Label Services). The album is the first Pet Shop Boys studio album to be produced by Stuart Price.

'Electric' features nine tracks in total - eight brand new Pet Shop Boys' songs plus a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'The Last To Die'.  The result is as uncompromising a collection of dance anthems as Pet Shop Boys have ever made.

Pet Shop Boys said: "'Electric' is very much set on the dance floor.  Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas 'Elysium' had a reflective mood, 'Electric' is pretty banging! And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time".

Stuart Price said: "Making 'Electric' was an exciting experience. We recorded it between Berlin, London and Los Angeles using various techniques between old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling. For me it was a chance to work with two people who shaped so much of my musical taste, yet who keep on pushing farther in both a natural and unexpected fashion. 'Disco' (from 1986) was an album that always spoke to me because it blended song arrangements with dance floor mixes, and that is what 'Electric' felt like to make. Allowing songs to be full length without considering the pop rules, disregarding classic structures and instead just working instinctively on what was fun and danceable."

The track listing for 'Electric' is:

1. Axis
2. Bolshy
3. Love is a bourgeois construct
4. Fluorescent
5. Inside a dream
6. The last to die
7. Shouting in the evening
8. Thursday (featuring Example)
9. Vocal
